AUTHOR WRITER
UDC: Name? Who you are? Background Information? AW: Author Writer or Mr. D. I’m from Memphis, Tennessee. I’ve been in this game for life. Rapping since I was six, writing and trying to do my thing for about two or three years seriously. I have been in Atlanta, did some work with TI when he first came out dropping “I’m serious”. Ya know moving around and just trying to come up in this game. UDC: Explain what your artist name means to you? AW: It means original writer. It means someone that's not looking at the next man's style and trying to add on to what that man thought about. It’s what I feel, how I see it, the subject that I feel not being touched on. That’s what Author Writer does. Now of course Mr. D is just a person that can be on your level. If you want to make a song about busting heads. Then ya know we can make a head busting song. As far as an individual artist, Author Writer strictly talks about the things that he feels are important or might matter to the person that’s listening, instead of just some bullshit. UDC: Who are your musical influences? Why? AW: Uh... (Laughs) probably like Bobby Womack, Marvin Gaye or something like that. Somebody who is really talking about something they went through something the next person can feel or somebody that can lead you in the direction you need help in. As far as rap, 2-pac off the top and Jay-Z secondly to me. People like Bun-B, real live people that can display talent at what they do. There’s so many others, but right off the bat those three. I just like music in general. If my ears like what I hear then my head is going to bob to that sh*t. At the same time I feel like hip hop is what it is. That’s what the world wants to hear. So that’s what my talent is.
UDC: Is there a message or a theme in your music if so what is it? AW: Just being the realest. Trying to display that it’s cool to talk about something that might not matter to everyone or it’s cool to display education. To talk a different vocabulary, not to mystery rhyme it’s not even so much mystery but some cat in the hat shit. Just to display talent or to speak on the subject the next man might not speak on so quickly. Everybody can’t take it to different levels. It's who am I talking to, am I talking to kids, am I talking to old people. Also can I play this around my grandmother, can I play this around my ni**as. Some people cater to just certain muthaf****rs. Some artist are like I’m only going to cater to ho*’s, I’m going to write songs just about ho*’s or women. I’m trying to make music for everybody. I really make music in the mind frame of a fan. Like what would I want to hear if I had to put an album in the player? What would I want a cool rapper to say? Not the best or none of that sh*t, it’s kind of disrespectful to say the best because people are on different levels. At the same time what would I want a cool rapper to say? That’s how I try to make my music, for different emotions. If I’m riding to Atlanta and it’s going to be twelve hours I can’t be crunk for twelve hours. I’m going to go through my crunk parts when I’m driving fast and then when I’m slowing down I’m going to want to put some slow down on. Sh*t if I can keep that same artist in without having to switch all the time, like I say this muthaf***a can damn near go through they emotions as I drive, then I’m cool |
UDC: What are the three most essential items that you need when at the studio? Everyday? AW: Essential items needed in the studio... I’m going to need a couple blunts, not every time because I have been to studios where there is no smoking. What I prefer is being on a level I can understand. I have to have my pen and my paper of course. That’s the kit that comes along with it and I just got to have a happy feeling. That’s it. Other than that I can go anywhere as long as I’m full and got some water in that mutherf****r, I’m good. I can get some drink, but it’s not mandatory to have. That’s mainly it, get me some Mary Jane, give me my pen and paper and we are ready to roll. UDC: How do you feel the internet has affected your genre of music and the music industry as a whole? AW: Definitely, now I feel it’s a positive thing. Any type of exposure that can get you out there, I feel like that’s a plus. Somebody might not have paid for this album, but when I come to your city and do a concert they might pay to come to my concert. That might be the ten dollars that I missed out on this time, but I get it back through the concert. So if the internet can help me do that. Yeah it’s all good. I don’t have any problems with it. I feel like what else could put me out there like that other than radio or television. A newspaper wouldn’t print as fast as the internet can get me world wide. UDC: What types of pressures do you face as an artist in hip-hop music? AW: The pressures that I have are coming together. At first it was not having beats or not knowing the networks that will get me out there. I’m constantly writing and trying to do what I know to do. The pressure is really not that hard, it’s that I feel like eventually it will happen when it suppose to. I’m twenty two and a lot of my favorites are old, not old but old in rap. There are only a few cats that can keep it going, and still keep it pimpin. Too Short or some sh** like that. No matter what they say it’s all good it’s Cube, its Snoop Dogg, its Jay-Z. Whatever they say it’s guaranteed to be tight because they’ve earned that respect over the work that they put out over the years. I feel like if I consistently put that work out over years in do time it won’t matter what I say. Because they will say I know that muthaf*****s bumpin. They will have seen enough sh*t to say what’s next. I don’t want it to talk about another vehicle. It’s all cool whatever you have to do to feed your family. If you have to talk about that, do that. At the same time as an individual artist, I feel like I have to touch on so many different aspects if that’s what the people are going to expect of me. Like I said, I look at it from a fan aspect, I know what I like and I know what I don’t like. I just try to do what I know I would like. UDC: Are there any words you would like to express to your audience? AW: When you hear the name Author Writer, when you hear the name Mr. D, just listen, be prepared and know I’m going to hold it down for you. It’s not just about music. It's about growing in life and being able to hold it down for youself. Being an individual and staying on your toes, and if you have kids take care of your responsibility. I want to express a better way of thinking for those who want to better themselves in life. Some of us are after the millions, but all of us got to get a real meal to live. I’m just trying to display something to help you get through eating, if I can do that. Make it cool for you want to have some sh*t or to tell a mutherf****r that I’m me. I just want to display that all you can do is be yourself. When you hear me I don’t want you to hear no one else but me. I don’t bite styles so it’s all cool.
