DMAGINEST
Of Secret Menace

UDC: Name? Who you are. Background Information?

DMAG: Dmaginest. I’m from Michigan. Born in Michigan, raised in Wiesbaden, Germany. I spent eight years there. Then I moved to the dirty dirty which introduced me to Arkansas, and then I was brought here to Dallas, Texas. I did a little time in job core from Shreveport to Oklahoma. I’m a military brat.

UDC: Explain what Dmaginest means to you?

DMAG: I got a saying it goes, “Without the mind time wouldn’t exist, out of the darkness come Dmaginest.” The meaning is when I was younger I was just like a Curious George. I had many ideas. To me everything is an imagination, a state of mind. So I put the D in front of Maginest. And that makes Dmagniest.

UDC: Who are your musical influences? Why?

DMAG: Kool G. Rap, Rakim, from the East Coast. West Coast: we got Ice Cube, we got Ice T, Yukmouth, and Too Short. Man, just all the pioneers such as Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe Dee, and LL Cool J. We got so many… just all the pioneers that were out from back in the day. They all sent a message to me. They inspired me to buy their album. They inspired me to do my own little thing.

UDC: What was your first experience with Hip Hop?

DMAG: The first experience was around 1985, I was in Bacharach, Germany and some cats were break dancing to some Bebop. They had the boom box, you know, cats used to do there thing such as spinning. That’s what inspired me. So, I must say that my first involvement in Hip Hop were the break dance days. Nowadays they do the little booty dances. I don’t know how to do those booty dances, but I know how to break dance still to this day. That’s Hip Hop to me.

UDC: What do you think are the advantages of being independent or underground as an artist?

DMAG: I think that the advantage is that you get to put out what you want to put out, when you want to put it out, and as much as you want to put out. Plus, if you got your own street team you can make anything happen. If you got that one hit song, I feel you can make it happen on the radio station. If not the radio station you can do just the club scene by hitting the DJ’s. It doesn’t just have to be the radio station. I don’t believe that’s the only way, I think there’s mad ways to blow up without the radio. Keep it underground, make sure you got a strong team that will stick together, and hold it down for each other without turning on each other

UDC: Any disadvantages of being independent or underground as an artist?

DMAG: You don’t get the radio spins that you want to get. I think also the disadvantages are you don’t get the big promotions. Really, that’s about it, your CD’s may not be shrink wrapped. But, there are a lot of things that come with being signed versus being independent. Overall, I think we got the advantage over the majors because we got what the street wants to hear.

UDC: Is there any words of encouragement to aspiring artist?

DMAG: Understand the business then after understanding the business, understand the talent. And from the talent aspect just keep doing what you do. I feel like if you have a dream and you want that dream to come true, you have to pursue it and make it come true. You can’t just sit around and think it’s going to (continued at top)

come true, you’ve got to make it happen. So get up, get out and do something about it. Also, do the knowledge, do your studies about everything and be open minded to everything. Then understand your talent because if you don't have talent, then it’s just not going to work. Know your position if you’re a beat maker just make beats; if you’re a rapper just make raps. If you aren’t the best understand your position, you may have to put out your man that’s better than you first; just don’t hate. If you practice that patience you will blow, all of you will blow it’s just a matter of time. You can’t always be the number one man you got to understand who the number one man on your label is and let them go for it, first.

UDC: What can you say about your style of music?

DMAG: Original, I think that’s the best way to be is original. I don’t want to sound like the next man and I don’t want the next man to sound like me. So, being the special Ed kid that I am it’s easy for me to do some stupid shit. To write a rhyme… I don’t think anybody can do it like me. I definitely feel like I stand out from the normal class students. I’m dumb with it. So that’s exactly what makes me stand out from the rest. Dmaginest.

UDC: So what is priority number one for Dmaginest?

DMAG: Priority number one? Really… I want to be heard. That’s priority number one. I want to be heard, I want to be seen. I feel like a lot of artist that are out right now, they aren’t doing it right. You know. So therefore, I want to put the word out on the streets on how it’s supposed to be.

UDC: How do you feel the internet has affected your genre of music and the music industry as a whole?

DMAG: The internet is a valuable resource especially for the independent artists and labels. Being able to hear the artist, see the artist and read about the artist, right now there isn’t a better promotion available, which gives this much exposure. Now, we independents got the internet for promotions. I feel like the internet is the best resource right now; I don’t see any disadvantages other than if you didn’t know how to use the internet. Then it might be the biggest disadvantage for you. If you do know how to use the internet then it’s the best for the underground. I got mad love for the internet.

UDC: Describe Dmaginest five years from now?

DMAG: Man, I don’t even know where to start... I see a future, I see a big bright future not just for Dmaginest, but for anything I want to do as far as videos, movies, recording, and songwriting. I feel that in the next five years that Dmaginest will have many plates to bring to the table. It’s going to be stupid. But look out! I definitely got some shit. You going to see me, you’re going to hear me. I know. I voted for John Kerry this time. My voice was not heard but I guarantee you are going to hear me.

UDC: Are there any words that you would like to express to your audience?

DMAG: Knowledge, wisdom and understanding that’s 360 degrees right there; that’s the foundation for everything. Do the knowledge first, then speak the wisdom and bring forth an understanding. That’s enlightenment right there. There’s not much your going to get out of life without discipline. Study something. I don’t care if it's the Bible or the holy Koran whatever it is just have some type of discipline about yourself.
