DAVID ELSEWHERE
UDC: Name. Background information? DE: My real name is David Bernal but my dance name is Elsewhere. I called myself Elsewhere because when I dance I get into it so much I get into this crazy trance where I’m not really there anymore. UDC: Who are some of your dance influences? DE: Well, there is a lot of people that I have been influenced by; dozen’s probably too many to name. As of now I really don’t get inspired by people anymore. I’m inspired by things that are not related to dancing like nature, machines and elements in the world that have nothing to do with dancing but they have interesting ways of moving. UDC: B-boying has become popular in the last few years. Why? DE: I don’t know it is hard to say. I think it is definitely interesting to watch. I think people like it for it nostalgic value. It is like swing dancing because it reminds people of a certain era. I think primarily because it is so inspiring and interesting to watch. UDC: Give me some insight into any current projects. DE: I am currently running a website called Detours video.com, it a dance video site that has a few clips on there of me and few of my friends. I made the original video about two or three years ago then I did a DVD version about a year ago. I sell that on-line and it is a video of several friends and me bustin’. That is pretty much what I’m doing now as far as selling videos and things of that nature. Every now and then I will get a gig but I usually do performances preferably media gigs like commercials or a TV show.
UDC: What type of commercials and TV appearances have you done? DE: The main place where people find me is on the internet and contact through email. Most recent gig was Volkswagen commercial in the UK actually it is one of the better things that I have done. I don’t actually see it but it is Gene Kelly singing in the rain. That was one of the things that I’m very proud of and I did a Heineken commercial in Mexico City. That is airing in certain parts of Asia and they told me it will air everywhere except in North America. Most of the stuff that I have done does not really air in the United States which really sucks. I have also done A Seven Eleven commercial, I have been on the Tonight Show, I have been on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Steve Harvey’s Big Time, those are like the big things that I have done. I have done other performances and smaller gigs like talent shows. |
UDC: What type of music do you listen to when you dance? DE: It is a weird kind of music. It called IDM or post dance music that is the primary music that I enjoy. It is like electronic music that has a lot of other influences of hip-hop, drum-n-bass and many other things. That is the primary thing that I’m into but I like little bits of everything. I grew up within several cultures like in the hip-hop culture. Most of my friends are into hip-hop and I also had friends that were into Electronic music. Those are two of my main influences. UDC: What is in your CD player or MP3 player? DE: It is actually a burned CD, a CD that I burned myself of whole bunch of different stuff. It has Aphex Twins and Boards of Canada, a type of Electronic group. I can’t remember the other tracks but that is what is in my CD player. UDC: How hard is it to gain publicity as a B-boy? DE: Most of those gigs were actually relatively easy to obtain. I am kind of lucky that is like that. It would not be like that unless I would have had all those internet clips and done all these gigs. It is through the internet so most people just contact me without me having to do any work. Actually doing those performances, doing those internet clips, and putting those videos on-line that was not a lot of work but it was definitely an effort on my part. It took some time and did not just come out of nowhere. UDC: Has your dancing taken you to other countries? DE: I’m not really in to traveling. It’s cool but I like staying at home and chillin’. I have been to the UK, Mexico City and many places in the United States but I don’t know if you consider that traveling. I have been to New York, Miami and probably other places I don’t remember. UDC: Do you have any type of preparation or ritual before you perform? DE: My preparation is just warming up and getting loose. I stretch a bit but not that much. People think that I’m double-jointed but I’m not just flexible. I stretch a bit and get pumped up. I don’t really have a routine that I go through because it is not physical demanding as actual breakin’. I have friends that break and they have to do all types of stretching and warming up. My dancing is different because at a moment’s notice I can do it out of nowhere. When I do have warning I will warm up.
