The story behind the caped crusader known as IMPELYA begins in San Antonio TX in the mid 90’s. Latin freestyle was all the craze, and the whole B Boy scene was in full effect. Inspired by the graffiti written walls and the sounds of the underground, Alex Robles began his transition into the villainous MC IMPELYA.
With hopes of becoming a well-known tagger Alex began searching for a name by which he would be known to the world of backpackers, and other graffiti artists. He would later come across a TV program about Vlad the Impaler, and find himself overcome with the character. It would not be long till IMPELYA hit the walls of San Antonio, and the caped one would find himself looking to poetry as a means of release from the stress and profound pressures of being an inner city youth.
In 1998 IMPELYA would move to the suburban city of McKinney Texas. This was a new start for the villain and his brother Miguel Robles, better known as WINDIGO. There was no graffiti, and the B Boy scene was nowhere in sight. In short they found themselves on the other side of the tracks. It was clear that new beginnings would bring new avenues to explore, and so began his transition into Hip Hop.
Inspired by artists such as Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Aesop Rock, MF DOOM, Beastie Boys, Devin Tha Dude, UGK, 2PAC, B.I.G, A Tribe Called Quest, Dan The Automater, DJ Screw, NWA, and Wu TANG; IMPELYA was on a mission to become diversified in his techniques. Growing up on Classic Rock such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Black Sabbath it was clear he had something more to bring to the table than his adversaries. His fascination with music led him to research and study genders outside of Hip Hop, and look for ways to bring forth an array of styles in his work.
In 2000 IMPELYA found himself in search of a crew. He already had WINDIGO, whom was raw and gruesome with his lyrics; yet something was missing. After a few freestyle sessions IMPELYA had found the third and final member of his crew. A young villain named Aaron Moreland, best known as MoFIEND, would become a certified member of THE MDMA CREW.
IMPELYA’s first mix tape entitled “DIE VERSE” was created in the smoke filled chambers of MDMA laboratories during the summer of 2005. Made to lure Southern Hip Hop listeners into a truly diverse atmosphere, the album was a hit amongst fellow villains, and local colleges. By taking Southern beats, and adding verbal techniques of the indie nature; the crew would prove to be original in their ways.
As a solo artist IMPELYA has taken on many aliases such as Dirty Dickinz, King Hippo, BIG IMP, and Thunda Foot. Each alter ego brings something new to tha mic, and further implicates the abilities of this Super Villain. Keep you’re ears open and prepare for his next attack entitled “I Wish Ya Knew Me”. The album will feature appearances by Tha MDMA CREW, Young J, and others.
