INTALEK
UDC: Artist Name? Who you are? Background Information? I: My name is Intalek and I am an emcee from Miami, FL (South Florida) who has been a patron of real hip-hop music for years. UDC: Explain what your artist name means to you? I: I consider myself an intellectual. I believe that in order to make truly innovative music you have to be a creative person who is willing to go a step above the rest. You can try to fit the mold, but five, ten years from now you could be easily lost in the shuffle. As an emcee I feel like you have to bring something different to the table, because if you can't, there is no point in even calling you an emcee. That would be a disgrace to all the true emcee's who came before us to lay this foundation, almost in the same way it would disgrace black people if we sold ourselves into slavery. Nowadays this slavery is in a different form, the media. Those who avoid getting caught up in the hype and still keep it tight, they are the true masters of this game. Many people, however, fall prey to gimmicks and images portrayed by the industry. That is the modern day slavery, and only intellect can save them from a fate like that. That's what being Intalek means to me, because I feel that is part of my character. UDC: Who are your musical influences? Why? I: 2Pac, because he influenced the game more than anybody else. Rakim because he revolutionized the industry and still has unbelievable skill, his complexity is almost unmatched. Kool G Rap because I think he brought the streets to the game and was light years ahead of his time. Big Daddy Kane because he embodies what an emcee should be, and helped bring a face to our music, and the Ultramagnetic MC's because they were the most innovative pioneers of the game. The Wu-Tang Clan too, because they kept it hood with no commercial airplay and still stack chips, which dispels the myth that you have to sell out to make a living.
UDC: At what point in time did you realize that music is what you want to do? I: Listening to Godfather Don's "Live and Let Die", He just came so raw, I don't know, something in me just snapped when I heard that, I couldn't stop writing rhymes for weeks. That's when I found out I had a talent. |
UDC: Is there a message or a theme in your music? If so what is it? I: I have a love for the culture, and I think that comes through in my rhymes a lot. I would say that my biggest message is that our music is too powerful to abuse with the gimmicks. Just come real, nobody can hate you for that. UDC: Are there any words of encouragement to underground artists? I: Keep working for what you want and it'll happen eventually, the only thing that can stop you in this life is you, and death.
UDC: What is your next project? I: Working on my LP, and collaboration with Undevco magazine. UDC: What are the three most essential items that you need at the studio? I: A notepad, beer, and a nice space on the floor to pass out. UDC: How do you feel the internet has affected your genre of music and the music industry as a whole? I: I think the internet has opened new windows of opportunity for our music, now I can eat emcees for lunch in the comfort of my own home. Convenient. UDC: Describe your career as an Artist five years from now? I: Years from now I hope to be holdin' it down for true hip-hop in the mainstream scene like Gotti in the mob, you know I'm here doin' my thang, but how can you stop it? UDC: What types of pressures do you face as an artist in hip-hop music? I: To hold it down for my peeps. I just got off the phone wit' my homies in Miami, and they all want me to hold it down for the block. I don't know though, cats get hemmed up quick like that nowadays, but I'ma still hold it down. UDC: Are there any words that you would like to express to your audience? I: Don't be a gangsta, be a businessman. Jail time gets you broke and keeps you there, trust me! Peace to the whole 305, peace to Broward County, and peace to all my people in the struggle, we'll come up soon enough! INTALEK
